Practical recommendations

The Australian pregnancy categories and product information produced by the manufacturers are generally insufficient to guide clinical decisions on how to proceed with a pregnancy following exposure to a category B, C, D and X medicine.

In addition, most product information regarding breastfeeding usually discourages breastfeeding. This is because drug companies are generally reluctant to recommend the use of their products in breastfeeding women.

The Women’s PBMG has developed a series of practical recommendations for using medicines in the first, second and third trimesters of pregnancy and during breastfeeding.

Comprehensive review process

The editorial process involves a comprehensive review of the current literature. Each medicine is reviewed by at least two physicians to ensure recommendations are in line with current practice.
